600 West College Drive
Avon Park, FL

As dawn broke over South Florida State College in Avon Park, the bright rays of yellow and pink streaking through blue skies in the east were over shadowed by the ominous dark storm clouds moving in from the west. The meet director wisely made the move to combine the JV races into one as she read the radar forecast before the varsity races began. As the time for the first gun rolled around the rain began to fall in ernest.

Girls Varsity

Right on 8:00am the gun fired sending 15 teams racing down the starting wedge to the first right hand turn around the baseball stadium. Front runners Julia Soto & Savannah Walter of Lake Region HS and Niyah Harris of Ridge Community HS pushed to the lead.

At the mile the pack had strung out behind the front running Soto with Harris and Walter in line behind her.

That was the order they stayed in all the way to the finish with Soto chalking up her third win this season in four meets (the other was a runner finish at the Jim Ryun). Freshman runner up Harris, in only her fourth varsity 5k ever, has never finished out of the top 10 and will be someone to watch.

Third place Walter celebrated her 18th birthday with a solid PR showing. The team victory went to the Lake Region Thunder with the LaBelle Cowgirls and the Ridge Community Bolts rounding out the podium in that order.

Boys Varsity

8:45ish the crack of the starters gun sent the harriers of 15 school into the fray of the boy's varsity race while a full on rain soaked the crowd.

At the 400 meter mark Zane Bryan of Lake Region HS led the charge over Sebring HS twins Eric & Damian Foster, Antonio Gomez of Frostproof HS and a whole gaggle of LaBelle Cowboys.

By the mile Zane had faded and Eric Foster took the lead followed by Gomez and brother Damian. That order stood until the finish. The pack running LaBelle Cowboys won the team trophy with host Sebring next and the Lake Region boys in third.
